Market shopping and medieval stories.
The small picturesque town of Loches is well off the beaten tourist trail, but is home to the best market in the south Touraine and some very significant French history. On Wednesdays and Saturdays our walk initially takes us through the market, in the pedestrianised streets of the old centre of town. Then we will slowly wend our way up the hill to the Royal Citadel where we will 'meet' Joan of Arc, Agnes Sorel (the beautiful mistress of Charles VII) and Anne of Brittany.
Monday-Saturday. Wednesday and Saturday morning for the market walk
The must see Chateau of Women.
Chenonceau is one of the earliest Renaissance country retreats in France. From the very beginning it has been controlled by women and you will find out how and why during our walk through the magnificent grounds and interior. The intrigues, loves and sorrows of the generations of inhabitants will be revealed. The chateau conceals centuries old mysteries and you will be invited to put forward your theories. A special bonus is the floral splendour inside and out, which will take your breath away.
Royal Power and Courtly Spies.
We begin our walk at the imposing Royal Chateau of Amboise, overlooking the medieval town. Once a maze of buildings the compound is now reduced to the royal apartments and a chapel. Turned into a comfortable residence by Charles VIII, it was also a favourite of Francois I, where he could work on grand projects with Leonardo da Vinci. Once we emerge from the chateau we will stroll through the old town centre to visit a church with some remarkable monuments connected to the royal spymasters.
